7 Best Tacos in San Francisco
If you didn't already have it circled on your calendar, today is National Taco Day and in honor of one of my favorite holiday's, here are some of the best taco shops (in my tasteful opinion) in San Francisco. I definitely have more to tackle so I'd love to hear about your favorite places for tacos.
Located in the heart of Cow Hollow, Tacko has to be my all time favorite taco spot in SF. Tacko serves fresh organic tacos, Chef & Owner run by Nick Fasenella, the same guy who started the infamous Nick's Crispy Tacos off of Polk Street. Tacko has an interesting Mexican + Nautical theme with everything from Lobster rolls to signature tacos. The are ranked by Zagat for having the best guacamole in SF which I can attest to.
- Tuesday's all day: $2 per street taco and tecates served $2 a can.
- Monday - Friday 4:00 – 6:00 PM: $5 Wine by the Glass. $5 Pints Sangria and $5 Pints Margarita
- Thursday – All Day: $3 Pints Dos Equis Lager
What to Order: Order the Authentic Mexican Street Tacos (all three carne asada) with chips, guacamole and a pitcher of Sangria.
2. Don Pistos + Tequila Bar
Another one of my favorites, they actually just opened a tequila bar down the street from my apartment on Lombard. The North Beach location has this beautiful exposed brick setting with fresh and spicy tacos. The margs at both locations are top notch and the service is exceptional and the folks working there are genuinely friendly. Sunday brunch is also popular at the North Beach location probably due to the fact that bottomless mimosas, margaritas and sangria are served.
What to Order: At the North Beach Location, the Al Pastor Grilled Pork Tacos & Guacamole with a Margarita. And at the Marina Location, get al pastor alambre and the strawberry serrano mezcal (seriously knocked my socks off).
Located in the heart of the the marina, Mamacitas is a super trendy spot known for it's tacos, margaritas and, but of course, the bar. I'd ignore the yelp rating this place is better than that! I love the ambiance and lofty ceilings - it can get a little loud but it comes with the territory being it's four times recognized as "Best Mexican" in the San Francisco Bay Area. Always a fun spot to hit up with a group of friends.
What to Order: The ceviche as a starter, Enchiladas and the Mamacita Marg.
This popular chain has four locations across the bay and is known for it's small plates, tasty tacos & tequila drinks. My go-to spot would be the Marina location with outdoor tables off of Chestnut street. I have to say they do have some really mean cocktails that quickly tend to refill themselves.
What to Order: Shot-and-a-Beer Braised Chicken Taco and the house marg (margarita de la casa)
This place is cool it has a Cal-Mex + Dive bar vibe located in the SoMa. It's actually known for there pressed burrito but in light of national taco day I'd recommend their street style tacos. Especially for all you Gluten Free folks - corn tortillas is where it's at. Really cool vibes and an endless selection of beer. It's a counter service set up and depending on the time you go the tables can get taken fairly quickly - I'd recommend having a friend grab a table while ya order.
What to Order: The street tacos with a cold bruskii.
This spot is cool. Like, hipster cool. All ingredients are organic, sustainable and locally sourced. Something different, huh? The Tacos Dorados de Camote or the Tacos de Carnita are delicious along with pretty much the entire menu. It was also rated SF's best Mexican restaurants.
What to Order: The Tacos de Pescado al Pastor (local favorite) and their seasonal sangria or el Diablo marg.
7. Nick's Crispy Tacos
Also known as the infamous spot in SF to go for Taco Tuesday's that also has quite the bar scene come after dark. Order Nick's Way anything and you'll be satisfied - this place is known for the two-tortilla signature tacos.
- Tuesday's all day regular tacos are $2, excluding fish, along with cheese quesadillas and chips and salsa with guacamole
What to Order: Get the Fried Fish Taco Nick's Way. If with a group get the $20 Margarita pitcher at the bar. Don't forget tomake a reservation ahead of time for Taco Tuesday (5-9pm) and bring cash for the tacos.
Where are your go-to taco spots? I'd love to hear! Xo!
